Architecture

The church was built in th 13th century and enlarged in the 14th when the west tower was built, the aisles widened and the carved cornices to the tower and aisles added with grotesque figures human and animal.

Access to ringing chamber: 1st floor via spiral staircase

The following information comes from F. Sharpe The Church Bells of Oxfordshire. He last visited the tower in 1947.

Frame: Metal 'H'-type.
Gear: Cast-iron headstocks, Fixed steel gudgeons, Self-aligning ball-bearings, Traditional English-type wheels, Hastings-type stays, Taylor 1927.

Notes
  1. Simon Jenkins (p534) states that the tower has a carillon which plays a different tune each day. ‘Home Sweet Home’ for Saturday.
  2. F.Sharpe‘The Church Bells of Oxfordshire’ states that in 1947 there was a framed certificate in the vestry recording the bell weights prior to 1789.
