When we ring
The Bells are rung for:
- Sunday services
- Weddings
- Local and national occasions
For example, St Helen’s bells rang out for the Queen’s recent visit to Abingdon. We also ring to mark more personal events – the birth of a child, the passing of a loved one, a major anniversary.
English Change Ringing
The English style of ringing is unique. The bells themselves move – unlike many continental styles where a hammer strikes the bell. English bells swing through a full 360°, from mouth up to mouth up and back, giving a much louder and richer sound. We don’t ring tunes. Instead, each bell rings in turn, and then we “change” the order, each bell moving only one position at a time. There are many “methods” – sequences of changes. The simplest such method, Plain Hunt, is shown here on six bells. |
